We don’t think much or try not to think about who makes our food or where it comes from because doing so would force confrontations with inconvenient truths. Where Japan had a long history of self-sufficiency in rice production, it is now turning to foreign rice imports because this is the cheaper option. From year to year, there are more and more accounts of a “rice crisis” and domestic rice growers are unable to keep up with the competitive prices of rice imports. Is there any usefulness to resisting the inevitable takeover of globalization? Yes but it’s too heavy a burden for farmers.
